Bursary Applications Extended to 8 August 2016

There is still time left to apply for financial help to attend the Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference (Cowes Cultural Centre, Phillip Island, 6-7 October 2016).  IT'S NOT TOO LATE. Bursary applications now close  Monday 8 August (5pm AEST). 

The conference is incorporating the Regional, Remote and Community Museums Day traditionally held at the Museums Australia National Conference. A number of bursaries are available to support regional, remote and community museum and gallery colleagues, and colleagues from Keeping Places to attend the Conference. Funding for these bursaries has been generously provided to the Museums Australia National Office by the Australian Federal Government Ministry for the Arts.

Funding is to assist with travel and registration costs. Per diem expenses, accommodation costs, wage reimbursement and sundries are not eligible for funding. 
To apply, please download the attached bursary application form and email the completed form to our National Office bursaries@museumsaustralia.org.au

You will not only meet colleagues from Victoria but be able to network with museum workers from across Australia.

The Conference is preceded the day before ie 5 October 2016 by the Museums Australia Education (MAE) Day. There is a FREE shuttle bus to take delegates from this conference in Melbourne called 'Making a dIfference: Doing it differently' to the Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference. Mysteries of the universe--correct Bursary Form


The incorrect bursary form was attached to the last email generated to subscribers. This is despite it reading correctly in the blog. This could be a mystery of the universe or indeed this is such a good offer its worth posting twice.

The Victorian Branch of Museums Australia welcomes and invites colleagues from interstate to attend its Future-proofing Conference 6-7 October on beautiful Phillip Island. This conference is incorporating the Regional, Remote and Community Museums Day traditionally held at the National Conference and bursaries are available to support regional, remote and community museum and gallery colleagues, and friends from Keeping Places to attend the Conference. Funding for these bursaries has been generously provided to the Museums Australia National Office by the Australian Federal Government Ministry for the Arts. The event will include traditional keynotes, interactive discussions, lightning talks, focused parallel sessions, and a discussion panel. Topics to be covered include: the impact of climate change on museum buildings and collections, developing regional audiences, interpretation and storytelling, and adapting to change. Keynote Speakers are Adam Rozan, Director of Audience Engagement at the Worcester Art Museum in the US, Dr J Patrick Greene OBE, CEO of Museum Victoria, and Jacqui Hemsley, Director of MAMA (Murray Art Museum Albury).


2016 Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference


The Victorian Branch invites Tasmanian museum workers to join them and interstate colleagues at the Victorian Museums & Galleries Conference 2016 to be held in beautiful Phillip Island at the Cowes Cultural Centre on 6-7 October.  Bursaries are available.

Under the central theme of Future-proofing, the Conference will consider the challenges facing museums and galleries, and focus on innovative ways to achieve financial, social (succession planning, staff training), and environmental sustainability. The event will include traditional keynotes, interactive discussions, lightning talks, focused parallel sessions, and a discussion panel. Topics to be covered include: 
·         the impact of climate change on museum buildings and collections, 
·         developing regional audiences, 
·         interpretation and storytelling, and 
·         adapting to change.

This year, the Conference will be preceded on Wednesday 5 October by the Museums Australia Education(MAE) Day and there will be a free shuttle bus to take those attending both events to the Cowes Cultural Centre. To register for the Education Day click here.

Keynote Speakers

Keynote Speakers are Adam Rozan, Director of Audience Engagement at the Worcester Art Museum in the US, Dr J Patrick Greene OBE, CEO of Museum Victoria, and Jacqui Hemsley, Director of MAMA (Murray Art Museum Albury).


Adam Rozan


 Adam Rozan is the Director of Audience Engagement at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts, helping lead this century-old institution into the future through innovative programming. An indefatigable advocate for visitors, Rozan is part of a movement to revolutionise the museum visit. In his role at the Worcester Art Museum, he manages education, studio classes, marketing, design, and visitor services. He holds a Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from Harvard University Extension School, where he is now an adjunct faculty member.

Dr J Patrick Greene OBE


Patrick Greene was appointed CEO of Museum Victoria in 2002. He is Chair of the National Cultural Heritage Committee and a member of the Australian World Heritage Advisory Committee. Patrick is a regular speaker at conferences and has lectured on topics such as museum management, science museums and contemporary technology, and tourism in urban regeneration. He has published numerous papers on these subjects as well as monastic archaeology and the nineteenth-century trade in Baltic timber. His book 'Egypt, a fascinating journey' was published in 2011. Patrick was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Salford. He won the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) CEO of the Year Award in 2011.

Jacqui Hemsley



Jacqui Hemsley has worked throughout the world in the arts sector. She has held positions at Noosa Regional Art Gallery (Assistant Director), Southland Museum and Art Gallery in New Zealand (Acting Director), Latrobe Regional Art Gallery (Director), and Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery (Director). Since 2009, Jacqui has held the role of Group Leader – Cultural Service with Albury City Council. In 2015, Jacqui was appointed as the inaugural Director of MAMA (Murray Art Museum Albury).
